Disneyland vs California Adventure – Nostalgic vs “Newer”
In first differentiating Disneyland vs California Adventure, I think it’s important to talk about what makes Disneyland unique and special and different from its sister park California Adventure.
Disneyland the Original Park
Disneyland Park is Disney’s original park.
It has all the nostalgic, classic Disney rides. Some of these rides have been here since the park opened in 1955 including Jungle Cruise, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, Peter Pan’s Flight, Mad Tea Party, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Disneyland Railroad, and King Arthur Carrousel.
And let’s not forget, the original and oldest of all the Disney castles, Sleeping Beauty Castle.
Disneyland Park is also the only park the incredible Walt Disney designed and constructed. In fact, it was the only Disney Park he ever saw!
So, as you can imagine visiting Disneyland will give you all those Walt Disney vibes. If you are a Walt fan like myself, visiting Disneyland Park at least once in your lifetime is a must!
For you Walt fans, here are a few must see and do’s at Disneyland Park:
- Upon entering the gates of Disneyland Park, look to your left and you’ll see the Town Square Fire Station. Located above the Disneyland Fire Department sign was Walt Disney’s apartment. There’s a lamp in the window he always lit when he was there. To this day, the lamp is still lit to show his presence in the park. 💡
- If you’re interested in seeing Walt Disney’s apartment, you can sign up for Walt’s Main Street Story Tour. This 90-minute experience takes you on a tour down Main Street and a visit to Walt’s apartment.
- Another fun thing to see while at Disneyland Park is the espresso machine located in Cafe Orleans in New Orleans Square. This is the same espresso machine that Walt Disney himself frequently used.
Disney California Adventure the “Newer” Park

Pros & Cons of Disneyland & California Adventure
Now that we’ve talked all about Disneyland vs California Adventure, let’s talk about the pros and cons of each of these Southern California theme parks.
Disneyland Park Pros
Disneyland Park has so many pros to it!
This is the original Disney park that will feel your heart with nostaliga and magic.
There are SO many rides, attractions, characters and shows to keep you entertained for days.
Disneyland Park Cons
Disneyland Park does not have any “cons.”
The only downside I can give you is the lack of what the “other” park has. So, if you’re a Marvel fan, you’re not going to be able to see your favorite Marvel characters or ride any of the Marvel themed rides.
Disney California Adventure Pros
Disney California Adventure is a nice, modern park with the touch of Disney.
Here you’ll find fantastically themed Pixar and Marvel-themed lands and rides. The Animation Academy is also a unique, fun activity at this park.
Disney California Adventure Cons
Again, there are no “cons” to this park.
The only downside to this park are that is doesn’t have as many rides as Disneyland Park. Also, if your looking for classic Disney rides and some of the classic Disney characters you’ll find a shortage at this park. This may not be an issue though if you’re not a huge Disney fan or will be planning on going to Disneyland Park too.
